GLE Fiber Optic Dies

The most interesting aspect of the parts in our shop is what the customer uses them for. When you see a GLE fiber optic die, you might not think anything of it. They look like short cylinders of carbide before they are pressed into their bodies. However, if you look closer, you will see a microscopic hole in the center of the die. These holes can be the size of a human hair or smaller, and have tolerances 100x smaller than a red blood cell.

5G Technology

The fifth-generation (5G) of cellular networks is here, and it requires a plethora of resources. The new networks will use higher-frequency radio waves than 4G, allowing for faster speeds. However, high frequencies of waves do not have as much range, meaning there must be many more towers than 4G required. More towers mean more infrastructure, which includes the metal required to build the tower and the fiber to carry the signals. This fiber is created by drawing raw material through metal or carbide dies that size it. These dies are required to be ultra-precise and have great wear characteristics. Without a good surface finish and tight tolerance, the dies would quickly produce bad material.

GLE Fiber Optic Dies

GLE Precision has worked with multiple companies at the top of the 5G industry to develop dies for the new fiber. Our expertise in small holes, tight tolerances, and high surface finishes allows us to help our customers pioneer the next technology. We produce carbide dies that have to be replaced less than dies created by other companies. After using our dies, customers have lowered their annual orders because of the increased wear life in our dies. GLE receives orders for thousands of these dies per year in a variety of styles. Don’t hesitate to request a quote if you are looking for a source of fiber optic dies!
